What to see in Jēkabpils

Jēkabpils is a city located in Latvia between Riga and Daugavpils. The Daugava river crosses the city. The population hosted an air base during the time when Latvia belonged to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

In 1237 the Livonia order built a castle. The archaeological excavations of the castle indicate that this place was a busy shopping center of the Latgalianos, one of the systemal tribes. When the castle was built, the people of Krustpils grew around them. The village was often destroyed during local wars, such as battles between Swedes and Poles, but was always rebuilt after hostilities.

During the seventeenth century, old -persecuted believers of Russia were established along the Daugava River. In 1670 this settlement gradually grows around the Taberna Salas and became known as Jēkabpils (Jakobstadt in German) in honor of the Duke of Curlandia, Jacob Kettler, who granted him his city privilege.
